Researchers have found that the COVID-19 virus can be viable on plastic for up to 3 days, and on cardboard for up to 24 hours. So it would not be surprising to find COVID-19 virus on, for example, a piece of fruit in a bin at a grocery store that gets lots of customers. However, by following good food handling and preparation practices, you can minimize your risk of contracting COVID-19. Furthermore, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while it is possible that a person could get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or eyes, spread from touching surfaces is not thought to be a common way that COVID-19 spreads.
It is important to follow traditional food preparation guidelines such as washing produce and other foods well with water, cooking food thoroughly, and washing your hands with soap and water before and after food preparation, and before eating.
