How should personal protective equipment like disposable masks or nitrile gloves be discarded in non-clinical settings, where an individuals’ infection status is unknown?

There is not much detailed guidance on PPE disposal in non-clinical settings. It is believed to be safe to throw away disposable PPE with regular trash in non-clinical settings, though it is recommended that the waste be in an enclosed container to prevent possible contamination during handling. Proper hand hygiene is also an important part of wearing and disposing of PPE. You should wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before you put on PPE. Wash your hands after removing gloves. Wash your hands both before and after removing masks.
